"Within the pages of this beautifully curated exhibition, you will encounter a collection of works created by students of my Visual Narratives course, all responding to the theme ‘Emergence’.
Each piece reveals the subjects its maker felt deeply drawn to, along with the imagery, materials, and methods they explored in bringing those ideas to life. The course encourages students to identify areas of personal interest and use them as the foundation for an in-depth, sustained investigation. Along the way, they experiment with a wide range of techniques, including printmaking, photography, and assemblage.
The resulting work, celebrated in this exhibition, is observational, exploratory, and accomplished. We see thoughtful interpretations of specific places, discoveries of beauty in the everyday, and ideas that have been carefully developed into meaningful, layered, often intricate, mixed-media pieces.
I am simply chuffed with what they have achieved. The quality, ambition and thoughtfulness of the work is exceptional. It was a genuine joy to read about their ideas and to follow the journeys they undertook to resolve and complete their explorations.
Many works incorporate multiple media and processes, resulting in rich and unexpected outcomes. I particularly love the diversity of formats on display. Rather than being confined to two-dimensional imagery, the exhibition includes three-dimensional works, including beautiful and exquisitely crafted book forms.
I am delighted to introduce this collection to you and hope you enjoy experiencing the work as much as I have."
