Place, Displace, Replace

When working in collage, whether using fabric, paper, found objects or a combination of all these things, the key to success is placement. Considering how one fragment connects with another to achieve balanced yet exciting, visually stimulating work is not easy. It can cause angst and frustration - it takes time constantly placing, moving, flipping, rotating or replacing until everything comes together and it ‘just works’. Being brave enough to cut up, rearrange, move sections, remove elements or add items that didn’t originally belong can make very exciting work. I think you will agree that the pieces displayed in this exhibition work beautifully. Some are sensitive and quiet, others bold and colourful but each one is full of intrigue and interest. It has been wonderful to watch the work develop and witness the brave steps taken to create these amazing pieces. I hope you enjoy looking closely at the details and intricacies of these richly layered works of art.
