In TEXTure, Claire Benn will help you shed rigid expectations and release these frustrations. Legibility and perfection are not the name of the game here.
Your handwriting can be a powerful springboard for expressive art. Through experimentation, you can create fascinating textures and visually striking effects. These explorations might stand alone as artworks - or become exciting new tools in your creative library.
At the same time, you’ll break old habits, build confidence in a freestyle approach, and find artistic growth in every stroke, even those perceived as imperfect.
Claire Benn is a textile artist known for her use of text, texture, and unconventional materials. With a background in textile art and decades of experience in surface design, she’s spent years pushing the boundaries of what handwriting can be, from stitched words on cloth to layered marks on wood, paper, and even cupboard doors.
Claire’s work sits at the intersection of writing and abstraction. She’s not here to teach you perfect penmanship, she’s here to show you how to turn your own handwriting into something expressive, personal, and visually powerful - no calligraphy skills required!
TEXTure has its roots in the teaching and studio practice of Denise Lach, who originally developed and taught these techniques. Over many years of workshops and friendship, Denise encouraged Claire Benn to take this work forward online.
What you’ll experience in this course is both a continuation of that lineage and a personal evolution shaped by Claire’s own voice and practice.
Throughout, you’ll encounter short filmed conversations between Claire and Denise, offering reflection and insight into how these approaches are understood, applied, and lived over time.

The Foundation is your essential first step. Begin by loosening long-held habits and reconnecting with handwriting as a flexible, expressive mark. Through a structured series of progressive exercises, you’ll build confidence and control before moving into ink, colour, and more complex surfaces.
You’ll learn to:
Work with black ink and a wide range of writing tools to explore how marks change under pressure, repetition, layering, and disruption. This chapter builds confidence through focused experimentation and close observation.
You’ll learn to:
Introduce colour as a way to extend texture, mood, and meaning without overpowering the written mark. You’ll explore how colour interacts with text, line, and surface to create depth and visual rhythm.
You’ll learn to:
Build on the skills developed so far by shifting focus toward intention, structure, and visual decision-making. This chapter explores how text can be organised and composed to communicate meaning more clearly.
You’ll learn to:
Move beyond technique and into interpretation, transforming personal inspiration into expressive visual work. This chapter focuses on abstraction, meaning, and visual storytelling through text and mark-making.
You’ll learn to:
Expand your creative vocabulary by moving beyond pen and paper. This chapter introduces alternative materials and processes that allow text to take new forms while remaining grounded in your own handwriting and mark-making.
You’ll be inspired by:
Learn how to transform cloth into a paper-like surface using soya milk sizing - ideal for writing, mark-making, and pigment work on fabric.
You’ll learn to:
This bonus activity introduces randomness as a creative prompt. Use it to keep your explorations fresh and break habitual ways of working.
Here, you'll:
Use printable prompt cards to revisit techniques from each chapter in unexpected combinations.
Let chance guide your creative decisions - ideal for when you feel stuck or want to push boundaries.
Combine prompts across chapters to discover surprising new approaches to composition, colour, and mark-making.
I have never had a teacher who went so far above and beyond the parameters of the course to touch ever single student no matter their experience.
I enjoyed Claire’s no nonsense teaching style and the encouragement to go out there and make your own art rather than being a copy of the tutor.
Claire is an exceptional teacher with a true generosity of spirit. She genuinely cares about her students’ outcomes and takes the time to offer thoughtful, constructive feedback.
I never thought writing would belong in my textile work. This course completely changed that - and it continues to shape my practice.
I had already been using text in my textile work, but it felt obvious and unresolved. This course completely shifted that. The principles and techniques I learned from Claire have continued to shape my work long after the class ended. Her teaching really is a cut above.
Text was never part of my practice – in fact, I actively avoided words. Working with Claire on TEXTure completely changed that. I discovered ways of ‘writing’ through cloth, stitch, inks, and pigments, and now text is an integral part of my work. With Claire’s mentoring, you never quite know where the work will lead – and that’s the joy of it. You don’t need to be a writer or calligrapher. Just take the plunge.
Direct interaction with Claire for up to 8 weeks.

Your tutor will be available in your private student community group on Facebook during the live tutor interaction period. For your course, this period will be between 13th of February 2026 and the 10th of April 2026.
At this stage, we choose to host our student community groups on Facebook as it’s a free, accessible platform that allows ease of communication for both students and tutors.
To ensure an inclusive experience, we live stream our Q&A sessions through YouTube and send regular updates via email for those unable to create a Facebook account.
We also have multiple moderators actively engaged within the group to ensure our communities remain safe and welcoming learning environments.
This Facebook community is not compulsory, but it’s highly recommended – and our feedback shows that students love it.
FATT have put together this fabulous format that nurtures the interactions among us. I didn’t even do Facebook before!
– Chris C.
