An invitation to explore your handwriting as expressive mark-making
What Claire's students say:
I have never had a teacher who went so far above and beyond the parameters of the course to touch ever single student no matter their experience.
I enjoyed Claire’s no nonsense teaching style and the encouragement to go out there and make your own art rather than being a copy of the tutor.
Claire is an exceptional teacher with a true generosity of spirit. She genuinely cares about her students’ outcomes and takes the time to offer thoughtful, constructive feedback.
I had already been using text in my textile work, but it felt obvious and unresolved. This course completely shifted that. The principles and techniques I learned from Claire have continued to shape my work long after the class ended.
Text was never part of my practice – in fact, I actively avoided words. Working with Claire on TEXTure completely changed that. I discovered ways of ‘writing’ through cloth, stitch, inks, and pigments, and now text is an integral part of my work. You don’t need to be a writer or calligrapher. Just take the plunge.
I never thought writing would belong in my textile work. This course completely changed that - and it continues to shape my practice.
With all its imperfections, your handwriting might be the key to unlocking your artistic voice.
Many of us feel our handwriting isn't artistic, and believe our marks aren't "good enough." The beauty of ink and personal expression often seem out of reach, hindering a truly authentic art form.
In TEXTure, Claire Benn will help you release these frustrations, and shed rigid expectations.
Legibility is not the name of the game here.
You’ll break old habits, build confidence in a freestyle approach, and find artistic growth in every stroke, even those perceived as imperfect.
Yes, your handwriting has always been with you. Now, it can be integral to your art practice.
Your handwriting has always been with you. Now it will become integral to your art practice. With Claire Benn as your guide, you'll:
Discover the expressive potential of your handwriting as a rich source of marks, rhythm, and personal voice.
Explore how written marks can weave into any creative discipline - layered, abstracted, repeated, and transformed.
Use inks, graphite, and everyday materials to build textured surfaces without needing specialist equipment or techniques.
Engage directly with Claire and join a process-led community where experimentation and individuality are valued.
Watch your handwriting evolve into your own visual language marks that carry meaning, movement, and emotion.
Share your work in a global creative space in a curated online exhibition that celebrates process over perfection.
Inside every failure lies an enormous opportunity to develop and to learn, to extract beauty from failure, to enlarge and take something that you think was small and insignificant into big and powerful and bold and graphic.
- Claire Benn
Text has always been at the heart of Claire Benn’s creative practice. Inspired first by her father’s calligraphy and later by contemporary calligraphers like Denise Lach and Brody Neuenschwander, she sees text as simply another mark – just like stitch – with endless potential for abstraction, composition and personal expression. Claire loves exploring how writing can become art, whether it forms a bold statement piece or simply a thoughtful card for a friend.
Although her broader practice spans dyes, earth pigments and stitched textiles, her passion for text remains constant. She even shares a method for making cloth behave more like paper so text lovers can enjoy the best of both worlds. Claire has worked closely with calligraphy maestra Denise Lach, and you’ll meet Denise in the bonus footage – a tribute to her influence and an invitation to unleash the beauty of your own hand.
Claire was the natural person to take this work forward. She knows it, she honours it, and she’s made it her own.
