What artists experience in Focus and Flow:

Karen is one of those artists who understands how to teach other artists. That is to say, she is technically helpful and clear, as well as knowing how to gently and gracefully make safe space for others to fulfill their own vision. Her work is inspiring, and so is she.
Jen A.
Karen Olson was just about the best thing that ever happened to me. At 70, I thought I never had and never would have a creative bone in my body. What joy and delight to find something inside me, at long last, which I took to like ducks to water. You cannot find a better inspirational teacher anywhere, in my humble opinion.
Catharine M.
I hadn’t realised how much I needed the profound insights Karen delivers. She shares her wisdom in such a gentle and thoughtful way, and this course has been exactly what I needed.
Christine S
This course is exactly what I needed and wanted. It’s been a life-changing experience. I learned a lot about myself and will be continuing with my experiments - so many ideas, so many different fibres to try.
Carol L
I didn’t realise how much I needed Karen in my life. I’ve read about forest bathing before, and this course has given me so much. I can’t wait to take my walk this weekend.

There is growing research that supports what artists have always known: Time in nature restores our nervous system. Making art helps us heal.

Yes, your handwriting has always been with you. Now, it can be integral to your art practice. When the world feels overwhelming, the simple act of making can help you find clarity, purpose, and peace.

Art lets you process complex emotions and experiences without having to “solve” them outright. It can help you express things words cannot - whether it’s fear, grief, hope, or rage. And art can soothe your nervous system, shift your perspective, and reconnect you to a sense of meaning – even when life feels messy or uncertain.

In Focus and Flow, you’ll pair photography, papermaking, papersculpting, and printing with forest bathing to create a sustainable art practice that supports you to keep showing up - without burning out.

In a world that often feels very rushed and disconnected, finding ways to slow down and sync with nature is more important than ever.

- Karen Olson

Karen Olson is a lens-based mixed media artist whose work explores the dialogue between human emotion and the natural world through photography and mixed media. Her series Heart Song won the 2024 Rfotofolio Portfolio Award, and she was named one of Maine Magazine’s “18 Up-And-Coming Maine Artists to Watch” in 2022. Her work has been exhibited at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Waterfall Arts, and DUCommons, and she is a Board Member and Web Editor for the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA).

In Focus and Flow, Karen will help you use eco-art therapy as a tool for emotional healing, creativity, and resilience. Instead of waiting for inspiration, you will learn how to create creative flow on demand, using nature and art as grounding forces. Through forest bathing, expressive photography, papermaking, and unconventional mark-making techniques, you will translate emotions into tangible, meaningful artwork. With Karen’s guidance, you will build a creative practice that supports your focus, flow and wellbeing long after the course ends.
