A course for artists ready to let go - and trust what emerges.
Through Lorna’s gentle teaching, I found freedom in creating. For the first time in my life, I can show my work with confidence - I even feel like I didn’t make it, I found it.
- Ingela E
Art doesn’t need to be perfect -
it needs to be yours.
Many artists reach a point where their work no longer feels satisfying, even though they’re still making.
It’s rarely about lacking ideas.
More often, it feels like this:
You don’t quite trust your voice.
Your work feels tight or overthought.
The joy has faded.
You hesitate - before starting or sharing.
You feel blocked, but not empty.
Something is there… but something is missing.
The challenge isn’t learning more techniques.
It’s finding your way back to yourself.
Perfectionism and self-doubt quietly pull you away from what feels natural - until play, curiosity, and confidence fall silent.
Your visual language doesn’t disappear.
It simply goes quiet.
This is where Lorna Crane’s approach is different.
She doesn’t ask you to force a style or chase outcomes.
Instead, she creates the conditions for your voice to re-emerge - through curiosity, experimentation, and trust.
For many students, this is where things soften.
The pressure lifts. And making becomes joyful again.
A gentle framework for allowing your visual language to emerge through making.
Begin by making your own handmade brushes from found and natural materials - a ceremonial starting point that grounds the work and shapes every mark that follows.
Explore mark making with ink on paper through repetition, rhythm, and gesture, discovering how simple marks become a visual language that feels true to you.
Cut, tear, redraw, and reassemble your work to let go of control, loosen attachment, and uncover new meaning through play and transformation.
Translate your marks onto hand-painted cloth using pigmented and sumi inks, working across paper and fibre to build layered, tactile surfaces.
Use intuitive hand and machine stitch to deepen texture and narrative, allowing stitching to act as mark, line, and quiet storytelling.
Bring your work together as books and a hand-built fabric vessel - objects that hold process, memory, and a sense of your artistic voice.
Inside the course
Meet your tutor
Lorna Crane is an Australian artist whose practice spans abstract painting, mark making, handmade tools, and stitch. Working across paper, cloth, and sculptural form, she is best known for her distinctive handmade brushes and intuitive, process-led approach.
Her work explores visual language as something discovered rather than designed – shaped by rhythm, repetition, memory, and place. Through her teaching, Lorna invites artists to slow down, let go of perfection, and reconnect with their own voice, guiding thousands worldwide to work with greater confidence and trust.
Welcome to Perfectly Imperfect. It’s going to be a time of deep discovery.

Lorna’s class literally changed my life. The impact is ongoing. The best course I have ever taken.
As someone who has battled perfectionism, this course was a turning point in my creative life. Lorna’s instinctive, generous approach led to exciting and unexpected results.
I have been searching for a course like this for years - one where you can play and enjoy the process without pressure. I finally identified my visual language.
Brush making was why I joined, but this course taught me so much more. I learned how to combine fabric, paper, paint, and stitch in my own voice.
The sense of freedom and surprise experimenting with the brushes was exhilarating. The course feels like the beginning of something new, not something completed.
I had taken many art courses before, but never experienced this depth of personal exploration. Perfectly Imperfect gave me the freedom to play and explore without fear of judgement.
I would tell a friend to sign up without hesitation. Lorna is generous, supportive, and her course challenges you to experiment and trust yourself..
I can’t seem to stop making these vessels. This has been the best class I’ve ever taken. I’ve learned so much about my visual language and have so much more to explore.
Course modules
-
Module 1: Inspiration from Nature
Step outside with Lorna and explore the landscapes that inform her work. Learn how to gather found objects and select materials for brush making, while deepening your connection to place as a source of visual language and meaning.
-
Module 2: Brushmaking
Lorna welcomes you into her studio and shares the story behind her handmade brushes and how they have shaped her practice. You’ll be guided step by step in making your own set of five distinctive brushes - with two additional bonus brushes to explore - creating versatile tools for mark making that are uniquely yours.
-
Module 3: The First Marks
The first marks are treated as something to honour and record. Lorna guides you through ink, paper selection, and studio setup, while inviting stillness and attention as you explore the marks each brush makes. You’ll also create a simple book to document this ceremonial beginning.
-
Module 4: Overdrawing & Underdrawing
Move beyond the brush to explore underdrawing and overdrawing using a range of mark-making tools and found papers. Through layering, repetition, and experimentation, you’ll begin to loosen rules and allow your individual visual language to surface.
-
Module 5: Deconstruct / Reconstruct
This module focuses on letting go. Through collage, asemic journal writing, and bookmaking, you’ll learn to tear, reassemble, and transform your work - discovering how new meaning emerges when expectations are released and intuition leads.
-
Module 6: Hand Painting Fabric
Working with a limited palette, you’ll create a series of hand-painted cloths using pigmented inks, backwashing, and monoprinting techniques. These layered fabrics become rich material for later modules, adding depth, texture, and sophistication to your work.
-
Module 7: Extending Your Visual Language
ring paper and cloth together through collage, scroll making, and sampler books. Lorna encourages you to look more deeply at your work, embellishing with subversive stitch and discovering how these processes allow you to dig further into your own narrative.
-
Module 8: Discovering Your Artistic Voice
In the final module, Lorna draws on stories from her own practice to help you shape a cohesive body of work. You’ll be guided in creating a hand-stitched journal or vessel - a personal object that reflects your voice, holds memory, and marks this time and place in your creative life.
-
Bonus: Preparing for Artist Residencies
thoughtful guide drawn from Lorna’s own experience, offering insight into applying for residencies, what to expect, and how to prepare - creatively and practically - if this path calls to you.
