Nicola Bennett invites you into her studio on a sensory journey into abstract art via food, flavour, and colour:
What Nicola's students say:
Nicola’s incredible passion and generosity in sharing so much with us is very refreshing. Totally loving this course and firing up all the senses. Massive thank you Nicola.
The course could not have come fast enough for me and my excitement to dive in. And when I saw ALL of the modules are given at once (not dropped slowly), I thought I'd run thru them all, fast. Oh no, there is way too much rich materials and learning to be had in every module, so I am only on Module 3, or 4, savoring every bite. We are standing with Nicola in her kitchen and studio, listening and watching this incredibly knowledgeable and talented artist, as she humbly demonstrates and shares her feelings and thinking. Pure delight!
Nicola is such a people person and it comes over in the videos. The content is excellent and well explained with humor and self deprecation in places when things don’t go quite right.Another big bonus is that there is no time pressure to complete, it is Lifetime access so can fit anyone’s personal circumstances. 100% from me.
The course is terrific, Nicola shares so much, so many demonstrations, examples, discussions about her own work and techniques. It is exciting and very good value.
The course is filled with passion for food, color and mark making, thank you Nicola! It has been just lovely so far to make the marks with gesso and trying smudging the charcoal on the paper and these techniques was new to me, very inspiring and Nicola presents all the techniques very well. Love it!
Whether you’re new to painting or hungry to loosen up your style, Edible Abstraction is an online art course that serves up a fresh way to explore colour and composition.
Many of us feel our handwriting isn't artistic, and believe our marks aren't "good enough." The beauty of ink and personal expression often seem out of reach, hindering a truly authentic art form.
In TEXTure, Claire Benn will help you release these frustrations, and shed rigid expectations.
Legibility is not the name of the game here.
You’ll break old habits, build confidence in a freestyle approach, and find artistic growth in every stroke, even those perceived as imperfect.
Yes, your handwriting has always been with you. Now, it can be integral to your art practice.
Transform your love of food into expressive, abstract art. You’ll:
Create unique palettes and paintings based on your favourite flavours - sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.
Connect your love of colour and flavour through experimental drawing and abstract painting (even if your current skillset is limited to stick figures!)
Create richness and depth through glazing, layering, and mark-making techniques - using everything from brushes and rags to colour shapers and kitchen-inspired tools.
Use line, value, and tone to bring movement and connection to your compositions.
Learn how to work with both acrylics and oils - yes, even both in the same piece!
Join a global community. Connect with like-minded artists, and show your work in a curated online exhibition.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is how to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. When you’re learning something new, there’s always moments of frustration. But if you can stay with it, there’s real satisfaction on the other side.
- Nicola Bennett
Nicola Bennett is an abstract painter from Central Otago, New Zealand, who is known for turning flavour into colour, and everyday ingredients into deeply expressive works of art.
Before Nicola ever picks up a brush, she cooks. She squeezes lemons, roasts aubergines, and slices apricots. She listens, tastes, touches, and lets each ingredient speak to her. Through conversations with growers, chefs, and her own senses, she builds a relationship with the subject then translates that into colour, movement, and form.
Nicola holds a Master of Fine Arts with first-class honours from Whitecliffe College, and her work is held in private collections across New Zealand, Europe, Australia, and the U.S.
This course is Nicola’s way of sharing the process she’s spent years developing: a sensory, intuitive approach to painting that’s accessible, joyful, and full of depth. Nicola knows how intimidating abstract art can feel. Her gift is helping you move past that fear and into something far more nourishing: a practice that begins with what you already love.
