Turn your smallest, most ordinary objects into powerful, personal, stitched narratives with Anne Kelly.
This course pulled together all the different things I like to try and helped me sort out which direction to take.
- Jane I.
Before taking this course I had acquired many skills but found it difficult to achieve focus and depth in my work. This course helped me find that focus and I know it’s something I will build on with confidence in the future.
Anne’s course has inspired my imagination and given me the tools to move from crafter to textile artist. Anne was so lovely to listen to and made you feel that anything is possible.
This year someone described me as a 'crafting butterfly' when I told her all the different things I like to try. This course has pulled some of those threads together and helped me sort out which I should take forward.
Since Covid, my art life was non-existent. This course was like a glow of light and cheerfulness. It filled me with new ideas, new techniques and a new look at old skills.
Your most meaningful work can begin with what you already have.
Do you:
- Keep boxes of fabric scraps, letters, photographs or small objects you can’t throw away?
- Feel pulled to make work that carries memory and story - but aren’t sure how to begin?
- Have skills, but struggle to shape them into something cohesive?
- Want a slower, more reflective way of working with cloth and stitch?
Anne Kelly shows you how to look closely.
How to edit thoughtfully. And how to build a piece step by step, without overcomplicating it.
It’s about learning a process for turning personal collections into textile artwork that feels unmistakably your own.
If you’re drawn to narrative cloth, heirloom textiles, memory work and the quiet tradition of making textile art from what life has already given you, this course was created with you in mind.
In Collections and Cloth, you’ll...
Identify the collections, memories or places that genuinely matter to you, and shape them into clear, cohesive themes.
Use stitch, fabric, paper and found materials to create layered textile artwork that feels intentional - not random.
Shape unique work that reflects your life, your memories and your perspective.
Learn accessible printing and stitching techniques without overwhelm – fit for home studios.
Bring design, embellishment and mixed materials together into a decorative memory box or stitched piece that holds both objects and story.
Work at your own pace with lifetime access. Revisit techniques, rewatch demonstrations and deepen your practice over time.
You won’t just explore new techniques - you’ll have finished artworks anchored in your own story, renewed confidence in your voice, and a process you can return to whenever you need direction.
Anne Kelly is internationally recognised for her folk-inspired textile art and bestselling books on stitched narrative work.
In this course, she shares the structured process behind her work, so you can develop textile pieces that reflect your own story and aesthetic.
Her densely embroidered collages combine hand and machine stitch, mixed media, collected ephemera and vintage fabrics to create deeply textured, story-driven pieces.
Trained in Canada and at Goldsmiths College in London, Anne has built a practice that bridges traditional craft and contemporary narrative art and in this course, she opens up the method behind it.
My art comes to life when I find inspiration in the everyday objects around me. It's about seeing the potential in the little things and transforming them into something truly special.
- Anne Kelly
I was feeling "stuck" after not making any art for over a year, and this course gave me motivation and inspiration to get out of the rut. I found myself looking for ideas in places I wouldn't normally look, which took me in a different direction to my usual.
I am grateful for the personal journey this course has taken me on, its encouraged me to bring together many of my skills and learn new ones, whilst expressing my ideas in my own meaningful way.
I have learnt so much about myself and my capabilities as a new artist while working through this course – collage has always been a challenge for me so this course has made a huge impact on my artistic practice.
This class has taken me out of my comfort zone into a place full of new ideas and inspiration, using my collections and memories in a completely new way.
I was a complete beginner. I learned how to make my own design and express myself freely, using the materials of my choice. That’s invaluable.
If you value clear ‘how to’ instruction and good examples, this course is a terrific fit. Anne teaches processes that help you work productively, build skills, and feel reassured every step of the way.
If you love textiles, stitching and upcycled fabrics, this course is truly worth it. Hidden collections come out of drawers and become treasured textile memories.

Module 1 - Looking at Historical Collections
Looking at Historical Collections is your essential first step. You’ll learn how to slow down and really see what’s in front of you, using museum and cultural collections as a living resource for your own textile practice. Through observation, note-taking, and analysis, you’ll build a personal archive of ideas to return to, and a foundation for your contemporary folk art to grow.
Here, you’ll learn to:
- Plan and visit museums and cultural centres with intention, gathering inspiration from historical collections.
- Capture visual notes and sketches that become practical references for your textile projects.
- Analyse collections by zooming in on specific details – materials, patterns, techniques – that can spark new creative directions.
-
Module 2 - Identifying Your Collections
Identifying Your Collections invites you to turn inward and work with what you already have. In this module, Anne shows how personal objects and gathered materials can become powerful starting points for making, helping you organise, observe, and begin shaping ideas through drawing and reflection.
You’ll develop the confidence to:
- Organise and work with personal collections of objects and materials as the foundation for new artworks.
- Use observational drawing to connect seeing, thinking, and making, loosening up and building familiarity with your materials.
- Identify themes and begin planning your project by translating collected objects into visual ideas.
-
Module 3 - Developing a Theme
In this module, ideas begin to take shape. You’ll focus on organising and refining your thoughts using visual planning tools that help clarify direction while leaving space for intuition and discovery. Through mood boards, mind maps, and idea trees, you’ll learn how to draw connections between your collections, observations, and emerging themes.
You’ll:
- Use mood boards, mind maps, and idea trees to organise ideas and plan your project visually.
- Learn how to select, edit, and arrange key elements from your collections to strengthen a central theme.
- Work alongside Anne as she demonstrates building a mood board from her own sample collections, offering a practical model for your process.
-
Module 4 - House Stories
This module centres on layering, narrative and transformation. Working with elements from your collections, you’ll begin translating ideas into form through mixed-media textile work. Experimentation is key here, as you test techniques, build surfaces, and explore how materials can carry story and structure.
You’ll explore how to:
- Create a mixed-media, layered textile piece using fabrics, papers, and collected elements.
- Develop a small textile sampler as a space to test techniques before moving into larger works.
- Work with fabric backgrounds, paper patterns, architectural and background stitching, embellishment, and finishing details to bring depth and cohesion to your piece.
-
Module 5 - Printing
This module opens up the expressive possibilities of print. You’ll explore simple, accessible printing techniques that add depth, texture, and a handmade quality to your work, expanding how ideas can be translated across fabric and paper.
You will learn to:
- Work with easy print blocks and transfer your own designs for printing.
- Print on fabric and paper to build layered surfaces and visual interest.
- Incorporate printing into one or both projects using minimal materials, making it a flexible technique for small or shared spaces.
-
Module 6 - Mixed Media Suitcase
This module brings your collections together in a single, resolved object. You’ll work through the process of designing and constructing a mixed-media suitcase or decorative box, transforming personal materials into a functional, memory-holding form.
This module helps you to:
- Design and assemble a decorative box or suitcase to house your collected objects.
- Explore embellishment and surface techniques to add narrative, texture, and personal meaning.
- Combine materials and methods to create a finished piece that reflects memory, travel, and your individual creative voice.
-
Module 7 - Holding Memories
In this module, you'll create folding textile books. They will be intimate, narrative-rich works, and bring meaning to your materials. Using treasured scraps gathered throughout the course, you’ll explore how small, considered pieces can hold memory, story, and personal significance.
You’ll:
- Design and create folding textile books using collected scraps and materials.
- Learn how to assemble and embellish your book to form a cohesive, personal narrative.
- Explore how handmade books can function as keepsakes, gifts, or quiet records of your creative journey.
-
Bonus - Textile Portraits
This bonus module dives into the thoughtful, expressive process of creating a stitched portrait. You’ll explore how textile techniques can be used to honour and remember someone special, transforming an image into a deeply personal artwork.
You’ll learn how to:
- Prepare and plan a textile portrait from an initial reference image.
- Use photo transfer techniques, free-motion stitching, and fabric appliqué to build likeness and character.
- Combine technical skill with emotional sensitivity to capture the essence of your subject through cloth and stitch.
