Develop stitched landscapes using sketchbooks, cloth, paper, and stitch

Making Connections has been a life-changing experience for me. It has joined all the dots in making my textile art practice come to fruition.

Closing the gap between what you make and what it holds is one of the most important shifts an artist can make.

In Making Connections with Cas Holmes, you’ll learn how ideas grow from observation and sketchbooks into stitched landscapes made with cloth, paper, and thread. Ordinary materials begin to carry personal weight - not because they’re forced to, but because you learn how to listen to them.

Cas shows you how she works: how she gathers, draws, layers, rearranges, stitches, and lets the work evolve. You’re not asked to copy her outcomes. Instead, you’re guided to develop a way of working that helps you see differently and make decisions with confidence.

As you move through the course, you’ll begin to trust your instincts, take risks without fear, and uncover your own voice - the one that emerges when materials, place, and experience start to connect.

With Cas Holmes as your guide, you’ll learn a way of working rooted in place, observation, and lived experience.

More about the course

Meet your tutor

Artist Cas Holmes in her studio

Cas is an internationally renowned artist, writer, and lecturer celebrated for her innovative work in textiles and mixed media. She seamlessly blends her background in fine art painting and photography into her creations, exploring the intricate spaces between natural and urban environments and the personal connections within.

Her unique approach, often described as "Painting with Cloth" and "Stitch Sketching," involves a fluid, intuitive process that breathes new life into discarded materials, offering a glimpse into the overlooked simplicities of daily life.

Author of acclaimed books like Stitch Stories (2015), Textile Landscape: Painting with Cloth (2018), Embroidering The Everyday (2021) and recipient of numerous awards, Cas's work extends beyond the canvas into community collaborations focused on environmental themes.

These projects enrich her art and forge deep connections across communities worldwide. Cas's work, which has graced collections from London to New York to Australia, invites us into a world where every piece tells a story, encouraging us to find beauty and commonality in our surroundings.

This course is not so much a ‘how to’ as a ‘why to’. It’s an invitation to let your work evolve and your understanding deepen, as you translate learning into the art you want to create.

What students discovered along the way

I’ve watched the videos over and over and gain something new each time. This course keeps giving - it continues to inform my work months and years on.
Jeanette L.
The best, most-inspiring and value-for-money course, both online or in person, I have ever done. It’ll continue to inform my journey into textile art for a very long time.J
Janina B
I loved Cas's relaxed and supportive teaching style and her humour. The content was excellent and I learned a lot of techniques that I will continue to use, but most of all I learned about my own internal process and how to trust myself more.
Rachel W.
I was struggling to get my fabric pieces to flow the way I wanted, and I was frustrated by the limitations of my materials. Printing fabrics and wet applique' has opened up a whole new way of communicating the emotional content of my work.
Katy O.
This course cracked me right open. I don’t think I’ll ever be the same again creatively. I finally understand how to begin - and how to keep going.
Helen R.
Learning about Cas’ process was transformative. I’m now using a sketchbook with something approaching confidence. I’ve learned to be guided by the process, not focused on the outcome - and that has freed my approach completely.
Rachael M.
Being encouraged to not be precious about my work - to tear it up and use it differently - was incredibly freeing. I learned to let go of preconceived ideas and relax into making in a more organic and authentic way.
Naomi A.
The connection between continuous line drawing and free-motion stitching was a revelation. Learning wet appliqué helped me get closer than ever to achieving the results I’ve been striving for.
Louise D.
