Develop stitched landscapes using sketchbooks, cloth, paper, and stitch
Making Connections has been a life-changing experience for me. It has joined all the dots in making my textile art practice come to fruition.
- Lyn B
Closing the gap between what you make and what it holds is one of the most important shifts an artist can make.
In Making Connections with Cas Holmes, you’ll learn how ideas grow from observation and sketchbooks into stitched landscapes made with cloth, paper, and thread. Ordinary materials begin to carry personal weight - not because they’re forced to, but because you learn how to listen to them.
Cas shows you how she works: how she gathers, draws, layers, rearranges, stitches, and lets the work evolve. You’re not asked to copy her outcomes. Instead, you’re guided to develop a way of working that helps you see differently and make decisions with confidence.
As you move through the course, you’ll begin to trust your instincts, take risks without fear, and uncover your own voice - the one that emerges when materials, place, and experience start to connect.
With Cas Holmes as your guide, you’ll learn a way of working rooted in place, observation, and lived experience.
Layer, mark and rearrange discovering how cloth, paper, and stitch can carry personal history and quiet observation.
Translate everyday walks, gardens, journeys, memory into textile work that feels personal and grounded.
Let go of perfection and allow materials to lead by combining drawing, collage, printing, and stitch with freedom.
Learn how ideas connect and evolve over time, so your work feels cohesive and unmistakably yours.
Balance play with reflection and know when to pause, pull work apart, or keep going - even when outcomes aren’t clear.
Return to the course whenever you need it. Rewatch lessons, revisit ideas, and let new connections emerge over time.
More about the course
Meet your tutor
Cas is an internationally renowned artist, writer, and lecturer celebrated for her innovative work in textiles and mixed media. She seamlessly blends her background in fine art painting and photography into her creations, exploring the intricate spaces between natural and urban environments and the personal connections within.
Her unique approach, often described as "Painting with Cloth" and "Stitch Sketching," involves a fluid, intuitive process that breathes new life into discarded materials, offering a glimpse into the overlooked simplicities of daily life.
Author of acclaimed books like Stitch Stories (2015), Textile Landscape: Painting with Cloth (2018), Embroidering The Everyday (2021) and recipient of numerous awards, Cas's work extends beyond the canvas into community collaborations focused on environmental themes.
These projects enrich her art and forge deep connections across communities worldwide. Cas's work, which has graced collections from London to New York to Australia, invites us into a world where every piece tells a story, encouraging us to find beauty and commonality in our surroundings.
This course is not so much a ‘how to’ as a ‘why to’. It’s an invitation to let your work evolve and your understanding deepen, as you translate learning into the art you want to create.

What students discovered along the way
I’ve watched the videos over and over and gain something new each time. This course keeps giving - it continues to inform my work months and years on.
The best, most-inspiring and value-for-money course, both online or in person, I have ever done. It’ll continue to inform my journey into textile art for a very long time.J
I loved Cas's relaxed and supportive teaching style and her humour. The content was excellent and I learned a lot of techniques that I will continue to use, but most of all I learned about my own internal process and how to trust myself more.
I was struggling to get my fabric pieces to flow the way I wanted, and I was frustrated by the limitations of my materials. Printing fabrics and wet applique' has opened up a whole new way of communicating the emotional content of my work.
This course cracked me right open. I don’t think I’ll ever be the same again creatively. I finally understand how to begin - and how to keep going.
Learning about Cas’ process was transformative. I’m now using a sketchbook with something approaching confidence. I’ve learned to be guided by the process, not focused on the outcome - and that has freed my approach completely.
Being encouraged to not be precious about my work - to tear it up and use it differently - was incredibly freeing. I learned to let go of preconceived ideas and relax into making in a more organic and authentic way.
The connection between continuous line drawing and free-motion stitching was a revelation. Learning wet appliqué helped me get closer than ever to achieving the results I’ve been striving for.
Eight generous modules to slow down, make, and connect.
-
Module 1 - Looking differently
This module reframes drawing and the sketchbook. You’ll let go of the idea that you “can’t draw” and begin using your sketchbook as a place to think, notice, and develop ideas. Cas shows how drawing can be simple, flexible, and closely linked to stitch. You’ll work across different surfaces and learn approaches that support observation and idea development.
Includes:
- Using sketchbooks as a thinking tool
- Continuous line drawing and texture
- Working imperfectly and with intention
-
Module 2 - Drawing, observation, and appreciation
Here, you build on what you already notice. A simple, repeatable sketch practice helps ideas grow and gives your work direction. Through guided exercises, you’ll explore tone, colour, and layering, and see how drawing naturally connects to later work with cloth and paper.
Includes:
- Observation and isolation techniques
- Tone and colour relationships
- Drawing combined with collage
- Early stages of layering
-
Module 3 - Connecting drawing to stitch
Bring drawing and stitch together. Explore why they work so well side by side and how stitch can become another way of drawing. Cas introduces machine exercises that build confidence with motion stitch and construction seams, alongside practical guidance on papers and materials that support this way of working.
Includes:
- Sewing machine basics for mark-making
- Stitching on paper
- Straight stitch seams, folds, and form
- Free-motion stitch in sketchbooks
-
Module 4 - Printing with intention
Using what’s around you, you’ll begin printing on cloth and paper. These approachable methods help you build a personal collection of textured materials you can return to throughout the course. Cas shares simple techniques that transform everyday materials into rich, expressive surfaces.
Includes:
- Relief printing on cloth and paper
- Printing with botanicals
- Working with ink, paint, and dye
- Building a personal material library
-
Module 5 - Auditioning materials
Now it’s time to look again at what you’ve made. You’ll explore how printed and painted materials sit together and how small changes affect the whole. This module encourages curiosity and openness as you test layouts, colours, and combinations, preparing dry samples for the next stage.
Includes:
- Visualising and testing ideas
- Exploring colour palettes
- Auditioning material layouts
- Developing textile collage
-
Module 6 - Layering materials: wet appliqué
Here you’ll work with Cas’s wet appliqué method. By temporarily bonding cloth, you can stitch freely and respond more instinctively to your materials. This approach supports movement, confidence, and fluid decision-making as your layers come together.
Includes:
- Understanding cellulose adhesives
- Preparing materials for wet appliqué
- Lamination and layering methods
- Stitching without pins
-
Module 7 - Connecting your story through stitch
In this module, stitching brings everything together. Working into your layered pieces, you’ll see how surface, material, and stitch interact. Cas encourages a flexible way of working - moving things around, revisiting ideas, and continuing to discover what the work needs.
Includes:
- Stitching into dried, pre-pasted pieces
- Straight and free-motion machine stitch
- Relationships between materials
- Extending and reworking ideas
-
Module 8 - Hand stitching
The final module slows things down. You’ll explore hand stitch as a way of marking, reflecting, and responding - just as important as machine stitch. Through small sampler pieces, you’ll work with texture and thread, using stitch to reassess your work and enjoy the process of making with intention.
Includes:
- Hand stitch as mark-making
- Using thread for colour and texture
- Slow stitch sampler exercises
- Finishing and presenting your work
