Essence of Identity is designed to work in any medium because the question it asks – what makes your work distinctly yours – isn't tied to a specific technique or material. Artists who work across painting, textiles, printmaking, ceramics, and mixed media all find the process equally applicable, because artistic identity isn't medium-specific. It's yours regardless of what's in your hands.

Technique tells you how to make something. Finding your artistic voice tells you what only you can make – and why it matters that it specifically comes from you.

Most online art courses focus on technique. Essence of Identity focuses on identity: the creative history, instincts, and way of seeing that make your work recognisable as your work. For many students, it's the course they took after years of technique courses – and they describe it as the one that finally shifted something fundamental.

Your modules are drip-fed two at a time, every two weeks, giving you space to reflect, create, and move through the journey at a steady, manageable pace.

There are four live Q&As staggered between module releases to recap the previous two modules and help you plan and prepare for what’s coming next.

While many of our students say all our courses feel like masterclasses, there are a few key differences.

In this Masterclass, Donna won’t be teaching technique. Instead, she guides you through personal reflection, creative discovery, and the deeper process of developing your artistic voice. You can learn technique anywhere – but it’s rare to find a space that helps you explore who you are as an artist.

Unlike our Signature courses, where all content is available immediately, Essence of Identity is delivered gradually. You’ll receive two new modules every two weeks, giving you time to absorb the lessons, complete the worksheets, and stay in step with the group.

You’ll also have the chance to connect directly with Donna through four live Q&As, timed to align with each release. These sessions give you a chance to reflect, ask questions, and deepen your understanding as you go.

No matter your medium, experience level or style, this Masterclass

No. This course is open to all artists – beginners, hobbyists, professionals – and anyone seeking more meaning in their creative work.

No, Essence of Identity is not a technique-based art class. Donna does not teach her style of art. 

Instead, it’s a Masterclass focused on artistic and personal discovery.

Because this is a Masterclass focused on personal expression – not technique – the most important things you’ll need are an open mind and a willingness to go deeper.

You’ll be working in your own medium, whether that’s fibre, mixed media, ceramics, glass, or something else entirely. There’s no set supply list – just what you already have and use in your own practice.

However, we do recommend having a notebook on hand to capture reflections and breakthroughs as you go.

You’ll also be encouraged to take and print photos throughout the course, so access to a phone or camera, and a printer if possible, is helpful.

Yes. Donna will be present in the Facebook group during the eight-week live guidance window, and will be available during live Q&A calls. Please note this is not a formal critique class, Donna is here to help you excavate your personal style and give you a framework to create with confidence, knowing who you are and what you believe in.
