SELF-PACED AND FLEXIBLE
PROFESSIONALLY FILMED, CLEAR DEMONSTRATIONS
DESIGNed FOR HOME STUDIOS AND KITCHEN TABLES
A meditative online mixed media course with Eva Kalien that teaches you to listen to your materials, your surroundings, and your own quiet instincts.
I never thought I'd get to this point. Before I started this course, I felt blocked, I needed to recharge my batteries. Now I've regained my confidence and dare to try all kinds of techniques.
- Denise C.T.
There's a particular kind of restlessness that shows up in a creative practice.
You have the materials, the time, some skills - and still, something feels just out of reach. You start a piece and rush toward a result before you've had a chance to really feel the surface.
You wonder whether your work is too similar to what you were making three years ago, whether you've found your voice yet, whether you're doing it right.
The urge to control - to know where you're going before you've started - can quietly drain the joy from making. And the harder you try to fix it, the more elusive it becomes.
What if the answer isn't more technique, but a different kind of attention altogether? Poetry & Place will teach you to make art that could only come from you.
This course is deliberately unhurried - and that's not a limitation. It's the whole point.
I have taken many online classes and yours is the first one in which I actually found the path to painting from stillness and quiet. I am so grateful for your soft touch and artistic skill.
(Before this course) I would feel afraid to even start a painting sometimes and that served as a block. This new way of working is transforming my practice and I am more productive and having more fun. Feels like exactly where I want to be.
I discovered that time is also a tool when art making - slowing down and pausing, I see what's inside of me, and that has an effect on how I layer. The professional videography transported me to a new location which inspired me to step out of the usual and to see with new eyes.
I was stuck doing more or less the same thing, working in encaustic and cold wax. Working with Eva led me to pencil, ink, acrylic paint and watercolour. Don't hesitate, just do it.
I spent more time scrolling than doing, often only to finally sit down to make art and feel inadequate with the results. Eva's guidance and techniques have helped me most importantly listen to my own voice.
I have been an artist a long time, exhibiting my work. Being stuck and unable to move forward in my art was devastating. This class helped me enormously gain that spark and inspiration back.
In Poetry and Place, you’ll...
Find your place - literally.
Learn to use a meaningful landscape as your starting point - gathering colour, rhythm and pigment from the world around you.
Learn to make your own collage papers.
Build a personal library of printed papers using a gel plate, natural materials and handmade stamps.
Develop colour from the ground up.
Grind pigments from natural materials and discover tones that feel alive in ways ready-made paint simply doesn't.
Build surfaces with real texture and depth.
Work with marble powder, plaster bandages and clay to give your art a physical presence you can feel.
Understand composition through contrast.
Experience contrast - line and plane, light and dark, vibrant and quiet - as something you feel rather than follow.
Work in a series, find your confidence.
Across multiple sheets at once, the pressure of the single piece dissolves and a personal visual language begins to emerge.
There are teachers who share techniques. Eva shares something rarer - a whole way of being with your work.
Eva Kalien’s mixed media works draw from a rich background in graphics, photography, and painting, studied in Wuppertal and Essen Folkwang, with further masterclasses under Andreas Durrer and Gret Helsen.
Eva is deeply committed to exploring the poetic and intuitive nature of creation, connecting inner reflection with tangible, expressive art. Her practice encourages sensitivity to materials, rhythm, and the quiet spaces where ideas emerge.
As a teacher, Eva is generous, thoughtful, and deeply philosophical. She guides you step by step through techniques while inviting you to listen to your intuition, explore your own creative voice, and let poetry shape your art.
The art is there. Always. For everyone. Sometimes it takes a little courage to face your own art and welcome it.
- Eva Kalien
I was quite stressed before this course about finding a new way to make art. The last 2 years I have been experimented with abstract art without finding my way. Before that I mostly painted representational or semiabstract art and photography. I feel more content with my life, more into my body, and happy to know how to continue with my art. Let the paintings take time to make, so that I can listen to where they want to go.
I feel that after taking this course I am more confident in bringing these two disciplines together, whether that’s directly through writing poetry inspired by my artwork or vice versa, or using my poetic sense to inform my artistic expression. I’m also enjoying carving my own stamps again, something which I’d abandoned some time ago, and this is something I will be including in my practice more often now.
The greatest benefit for me was discovering a new way to see and connect with the familiar places in my life, of finding ways to use different media with a purpose. I love bringing text into my artwork, and although this was just a small part of the overall artwork, I feel I have found a new way to connect with the world around me through poetry. This course will coalesce all the things you know, add more to your repertoire, and help it to make sense while inspiring you to do more.
Prior to enrolling on this course I was driven by having a clear composition when embarking on a work of art, I spent a lot of time playing with sketchpads and avoiding making “proper” art for this reason. Eva has shown me the fluidity between sketchbooks and larger are, and that both can be achieved by just letting art happen, so I have become more comfortable creating art without preconceived expectations.
I'm an artist since half a century or even longer, therefore I was already aware of many in this course so generously offered techniques and possibilities. But never before I used them with so much awareness, joy and care. Working with Eva made me more sensitive and Eva guided me even deeper into the spiritual aspects and poetry of my creative path, something I was searching for since quite a while!
Before I began this course, I had done some collage, but was overwhelmed by it. I didn't trust my choices. I was doing too much, worrying about combining fiber and paper. Watching Eva work in such a thoughtful, deliberate way, so tuned into her intuition, is very empowering.
My artistic practise had been sporadic for the past few years up until the time of my retirement last year. I enjoyed so much about Eva’s Poetry & Place course. The course and Eva’s lessons introduced me to so many different methods of exploration and experimentation with many materials that were new to me. Each lesson expanded on the previous, cumulating in a final project that can be explored over and over again.

Is this course right for me?
If you’ve felt a pull toward working with memory, place, or personal meaning – this course is designed for you. You don’t need to be an abstract artist or have a defined style. Eva’s process helps you discover your own visual language, rather than imitate hers. Many students come in unsure – and leave with work that feels deeply their own.

Yes – a payment plan is available at checkout.
We know this is an investment, so you can spread the cost over time in a way that feels manageable. -

What materials and supplies are required?
You can begin with what you already have.

Is this course offered in German?
We’re so pleased to offer this course in both English and German. Poetry & Place was filmed and delivered by Eva Kalien in German. Eva then re-recorded the audio of the entire course for you in English. For this reason, you may notice that the footage doesn’t always precisely lip-sync, and there may be slight pauses in the audio. We believe the resulting course is one where you can enjoy Eva’s poetic and calming voice, as you immerse yourself in the making process.
