If you already have experience in fibre arts, this course is an opportunity to add new skills to your practice, see things in a new light, and take your work somewhere you haven't yet been.

Kerri's approach is about following what the materials tell you – not replicating techniques from a specific background. Students come to this course from embroidery, collage, mixed media, and beyond. Your existing creative instincts are the starting point.

Not at all. Kerri's whole approach is about seeing your own environment as a source of materials. The salvage store in Alexandra is where her practice begins. Yours starts wherever and whenever you start looking differently at what's already around you.

Yes. Kerri's teaching is warm, patient, and non-prescriptive. Her sensory, tactile approach – working with texture, weight, and natural materials – has been described as grounding and genuinely accessible. The self-paced, lifetime-access format means you work in the way that suits you, with no fixed schedule.

Not at all. Kerri's approach throughout the course is to teach you to see your own environment as a source. Yours might be a fabric offcut drawer, a local op shop, a garden, a beach walk, or simply what's already on your workbench. 

Kerri was taught by three upholstery mentors who each work in entirely different ways. What she took from that experience wasn't a single method. It was the understanding that there is no one right way – and that the most important thing a tutor can do is help you find yours..

Module 6 – Wild Forms – is the proof. There is no fixed outcome. Kerri didn't know what she would make. Her piece became a lamp. That surprise cannot happen if you're following someone else's aesthetic.

Most weaving and fibre art courses are technique-led: you learn a specific method and produce a defined outcome. Threads of Connection teaches technique thoroughly, but it uses technique as the scaffold, not the destination.

By Module 4, you're making your own design decisions. By Module 6, the plan is gone entirely. The course is structured around helping you find your own relationship with the materials – not replicating Kerri's.

The other significant difference is Kerri herself. Her background spans fine art, furniture upholstery, and a deep practice with recycled and natural materials. That combination is unique in the fibre art teaching world.

Latch hook is a textile technique in which yarn or fibre is pulled through a canvas or mesh base using a hooked tool, creating a looped or knotted surface. Traditionally associated with rug-making, latch hook has moved significantly into contemporary fibre art – used to build texture, depth, and expressive surface on wall hangings and sculptural forms.

In Threads of Connection, Kerri teaches latch hook as an expressive art-making technique. Module 3 covers the full range – basic latch hook, knotting, stitching, double sumac, and the popcorn technique – before bringing them together in a practice piece.

Weaving art uses the same foundational techniques as craft weaving – warp, weft, structure, rhythm – but the goal is expressive rather than functional. While craft weaving produces a defined object, weaving art uses the woven surface as a medium for personal expression, texture, and visual language.

In Threads of Connection, Kerri teaches weaving as the structural backbone of the course – tabby, twill, soumak, rya knots, twining –  but always in service of helping you develop your own visual language. You finish Module 2 with a completed woven wall hanging. By Module 6, the techniques you learned earlier are one part of a much larger, entirely personal creative piece.

Across six modules, you'll complete four finished pieces:

1. A woven wall hanging (Module 2) – built using foundational weaving techniques including tabby, twill, soumak, rya knots, and twining, with natural and salvaged elements added to the surface.

2. A fibre art cushion (Module 4) – the first piece that is entirely yours in terms of design decisions. Do your own style discovery, colour composition, and surface building using techniques from Modules 1–3.

3. An upholstered surface structure (Module 5) – a layered mixed-media artwork built on a frame you've upholstered, warped, and constructed as art rather than object.

4. A wild form (Module 6) – a sculptural piece built from wire, canvas, and whatever materials call to you, with no fixed outcome. Kerri's became a lamp. Yours will be something only you could have made.

You'll also produce a textile rope sample in Module 1 and a latch hook practice patch in Module 3.

Threads of Connection is designed for makers with some creative experience – but not necessarily in fibre arts specifically.

If you've been making in any medium for a while – textiles, mixed media, collage, embroidery, painting – you'll find the course meets you where you are. The early modules build technique from the ground up, but at a pace that doesn't feel patronising to experienced makers. By Module 4, the course is asking you to make your own decisions.

If you're entirely new to making, this course is still accessible – but allow yourself more time in the earlier modules.

There is no fixed schedule, but there are two live Q&A sessions during your tutor’s live interaction period – on 28 July 7am AEST and 18 August 7am AEST. The course was built for people with full lives – you watch when you want, pause when you need to, and return to a module three times if that's what it takes.

As Wendy put it: The freedom to take your time and disappear down your own rabbit hole is such a joy.

Between 3 July - 28 August, Kerri is available in the private student community group on Facebook. This isn't a cursory presence – students consistently describe her feedback as detailed, personal, and genuinely engaged with their individual work.

These are streamed via YouTube and later uploaded into the course portal so you can watch even if you can't join live.

After 28 August, your tutor steps back from the group – but the community stays open, and you have all the course content for life.
