Learn to see, think, and create through the conversation between idea and material.
What Lissa's students say:
Coiling has opened up a whole new world. Lissa is a terrific teacher, obviously very experienced in teaching the way she explained even the smallest thing. Going back over the lessons I picked up more. I loved the examples which I found very inspiring.
Lissa is an inspiration and I feel grateful for the opportunity to take this course. The lessons were clear with good examples of how to proceed with the assignments. I’m new to basket weaving, Lissa’s demonstrations were easy and fun to follow.
Lissa’s course was a turning point for me. It completely shifted how I think about combining materials, techniques and ideas. It has opened up a whole new language for expressing myself, and suddenly, everything feels possible.
Lissa's wonderful course has introduced me to yet more fascinating textile-related techniques to explore. I have fallen in love with coiling, and will continue to explore the many possibilities of this simple craft. Lissa's relaxed presentation style and her ability to explain techniques and design ideas in a simple manner made this course very rewarding.
If you want detailed instructions on coiling and exploring 3-D artwork, Lissa's class is perfect for you. She is an experienced teacher and her videos give you so many details, examples and instructions you cannot fail to gain knowledge. She takes you on tours of galleries and offers ideas on presentation of your work.
Let your materials guide you, and your creativity surprise you.
There’s craft in art, and art in craft. But how do you connect the precision of craft with the creativity of art? What happens when ideas spill out faster than you can sketch them, and your materials are more rebellious than responsive? When your attempts to create feel like a tug-of-war between materials, technique, and ideas?
As an artist, your practice isn’t a straight path - it’s a conversation; between you, your materials, and the art you want to create. If you’re ready to align your creativity with your craft, Finding is your chance to grab hold of your practice - literally and figuratively! - by reimagining what you know, and exploring what your head, hands and heart can create.
Through thoughtful exploration and guided practical techniques, you’ll learn to bridge inspiration and execution and figure out the practical day-to-day framework that will help you succeed as an artist. By the end of the course, you’ll see things differently, find things differently, and do things differently in your mixed media fibre art practice.
Using contemporary basketry techniques and mixed-media processes you’ll:
Learn to let ideas, intuition, and curiosity guide your fibre work through drawing, sketching, coiling, looping, and stitch-based exploration.
Develop artistic confidence by experimenting with processes and materials that encourage decision-making rather than perfection.
Explore how composition, material choice, and surface work come together to create resolved, meaningful forms.
Build a sustainable, process-led practice that supports the development of cohesive bodies of work over time.
Use sketchbooks, sampling, and visual thinking to move ideas confidently from page to fibre.
Connect with a global community of artists and share your work in a curated online exhibition.
I’m interested in the moment when thinking becomes making - when the hand knows something the mind doesn’t yet.
- Lissa Hunter
Lissa Hunter is an American artist and educator internationally recognised for her sculptural fibre works and mixed-media installations.
Her practice spans basketry, drawing, and mixed media art - disciplines she weaves together to explore the relationship between idea, material, and process.
For more than five decades, Lissa has shared her philosophy of making: that art begins with curiosity and grows through thoughtful engagement with materials.
Her work is held in major museum collections, and her teaching has influenced generations of artists seeking authenticity in their creative voice.
Through Connecting, Lissa invites you into her studio to experience how thinking and making become one - guiding you to uncover the dialogue that exists between your hands, your materials, and your imagination.
