A deeply personal course in collage and found-object art making – guided by the stories already waiting in your drawers, boxes, and memory.
You have a box somewhere. Full of things you've kept but never quite known what to do with.
Old photographs. A stamp you saved from a letter. A theatre program, a pressed leaf, a postcard with someone's handwriting on the back. You kept them because they mattered. But those precious keepsakes are all hidden away in a drawer, in shoeboxes, saved for ‘later’.
Most of us learned to make art by looking outward - at techniques, at other people's work, at what seemed acceptable to put on a canvas. We were never really taught to look inward. To trust that our own lives, our own collected memories, our own wandering eyes - that all of this is collage material. Rich, beautiful, irreplaceable material.
The story of your life is already there. You just haven't found a way to tell it yet.
Found objects, personal story, and the art of memory: Life Landscapes is an online collage and mixed media course with Robert Lee Davis.
Start small and find your footing. We begin on playing cards – small enough to be bold on, large enough to surprise you. A low-stakes way back into the freedom of making.
Learn to see the world as source material. Robert takes you outside to notice what's already there – peeling layers, overlooked textures, objects with a life in them. Sourcing begins before you touch a surface.
Collage techniques that give your materials a voice. Anchor points, cutting, glues, papers, photographs – learn how to bring gathered fragments into a composition that holds together and says something true.
Build your Life Landscape. Ticket stubs, fabric scraps, photographs, found objects – drawn together into a composition that maps your journey and celebrates who you are and where you've been.
Work from two perspectives – near and far. Robert takes you to the water to see the city from a distance, then back to the studio to make from that experience.
Take your story off the wall and into space. A bonus module: move from 2D collage into 3D. Transform elements into collaged beauty that can be appreciated from every angle.
Robert Lee Davis is a collage artist, teacher, and collector of the world's overlooked things.
He works from a light-filled studio in Melbourne, Australia, where found objects, sustainable materials, and decades of accumulated memory meet on canvas, board, and three-dimensional form.
Robert has spent significant time living and working internationally – including years in Shanghai, where he taught and developed his practice, and extended periods in places like Egypt and Europe, where travel, culture, and history became embedded in his work.
Across all of this, what stands out is not just where he has been, but how he has experienced it.
Robert’s work is shaped by a life lived across continents – gathering places, memories, and moments, then reimagining them through collage.
Collage for me is an assembly of all the bits and pieces of my adventures, my life – pulling all of those together to tell my story, or to somehow make meaning of place and experience

-
Module 1 - Connecting with your creative self
A playing card, a prompt, and permission to start. Working small removes the pressure of perfection and opens space for intuition, experimentation and happy mistakes.
In this module, you'll:-
Use prompts to begin without overthinking, letting curiosity guide your marks.
-
Prepare and layer playing cards with sanding, paint and collage to build textured surfaces.
-
Develop confidence through working in series and embracing imperfection.
-
-
Module 2 - Introduction to mixed media and collage techniques
Before you make, you gather - and gathering is its own creative act. This module invites you to notice what draws your attention and begin building a personal archive of materials with history and meaning. Along the way, you'll:
- Source materials ethically from everyday environments, walks and op shops, guided by curiosity.
- Use journaling to record observations and deepen your connection to what you collect.
- Organise a personal archive that grows alongside your practice.
-
Module 3 - Composition techniques
The focus shifts from open exploration to more intentional making. This is where collage begins to feel less like assembling parts and more like constructing a visual language.
Through this module, you'll:
-
Apply cutting techniques with scissors and craft knives to create edges that are expressive or precise.
-
Prepare surfaces with gesso, paper and texture so elements feel embedded rather than placed on top.
-
Work with anchor elements and compositional flow, knowing when to add and when to rest.
-
-
Module 4 - Creating a life landscape
Everything comes together here. Drawing on your materials, memories and compositional skills, you'll build a life landscape on board or canvas grounded in place, experience and meaning.
In this module, you'll:
-
Brainstorm personal ideas and symbols to clarify your story before committing to the surface.
-
Integrate photographs as flexible material, pressing them into the landscape so they truly belong.
-
Establish anchor points and refine flow across a larger surface, releasing what no longer serves the work.
-
-
Module 5 - Visual storytelling through mirrored landscape
Reflection changes what we see. This module uses symmetry, reversal and abstraction to discover new forms within familiar imagery - less about perfect symmetry, more about visual conversation.
You'll explore how to:
-
Observe and photograph reflections, learning to identify shapes rather than subjects.
-
Cut and reverse imagery based on contour, rotating pieces to uncover unexpected forms.
-
Balance organic and structured elements, considering how mood shifts with each placement.
-
-
Module 7 - Ways to exhibit your work
This module turns toward the world outside the studio - sharing your work with confidence, understanding how galleries operate, and finding the community that sustains a practice over time.
Across this module, you'll:
-
Approach galleries professionally, building genuine relationships and presenting a cohesive body of work.
-
Explore alternative venues that offer meaningful opportunities to share your work and find new audiences.
-
Draw on community and constructive feedback as ongoing resources for growth and clarity.
-
-
Bonus module – Working with natural materials
This final module moves beyond the flat surface into three-dimensional form - exploring how found organic objects like seed pods and branches become the foundation for sculptural life landscapes. Through hands-on making, you'll:
- Source and prepare natural materials responsibly, selecting forms with structure, texture and character.
- Wrap and layer flexible papers, letting the contours of each object guide your placement.
- Integrate collage onto sculptural forms and consider how finished pieces might be displayed or suspended.
You’ll be supported every step of the way with:
Direct interaction with Robert for up to 8 weeks.
8 + hours of professionally-filmed video lessons.
Unlimited learning with lifetime access.
A worldwide community of artists.
Your questions answered in two live Q&As.
Comprehensive workbooks to reinforce your learning.
… plus the community and resources to keep the conversation flowing long after the course ends.
This course is really about connecting with yourself and connecting with your creative ability to make work and to make work that's meaningful, not only to you, but to your life, to the experiences that you have in life.
- Robert Lee Davis
Life Landscapes is right for you if...
- You've kept mementos, photographs, or collected objects over the years and you're ready to do something meaningful with them.
- You make art - or want to - but feel more drawn to personal expression than technique for its own sake.
You want a collage practice that feels meditative, unhurried, and genuinely your own. - You're curious about collage art but haven't yet found an approach that feels personal rather than decorative.
- You're ready to slow down, look more closely at your own life, and celebrate what you find there.
The only way that artists grow and learn is if we try something new, try something different.
