Embrace playful experimentation.
Create with curiosity, not pressure.
IMMEDIATE AND LIFETIME ACCESS
LEARN AT OWN PACE
Begin with the land.
Let the work unfold.
This course nurtured my soul. I watched the videos over and over – like being with a friend. Roxanne reminded me to slow down, notice the tiniest things, and reconnect with my voice. I will look at my surroundings in a completely new way from now on.
– Cathy Bader Mills
PLAY is often associated with mixed media - and when it’s done well, it’s easy to see why.
When you create from a place of curiosity rather than expectation, the work begins to carry its own energy. There’s space for spontaneity, experimentation, and authentic response – without the pressure to get it “right.”
In Wilderness & Wonder, Roxanne gently guides you between landscape and studio, inviting you to slow down, notice, and make work that grows from experience.
A creative journey through six creative projects shaped by place, process, and play
Create a landscape-inspired sketchbook collage, using observation, walking, and land art as a starting point for abstract mark-making and layered surfaces.
Paint an earth-inspired sketchbook series, delving beneath the surface to explore layers, pigments, texture, and the hidden rhythms of the land.
Develop a mindful making practice
Slow your process, build focus, and create space for reflection, presence, and deep engagement with your work.
Create a butterfly-inspired larger mixed media artwork, moving between land art, drawing, collage, and painting to explore movement, transformation, and abstraction.
Build assemblage artworks inspired by water, using found objects, photography, and three-dimensional composition to respond to flow, change, and connection.
Bring everything together in a deeply personal mandala artwork, integrating techniques from across the course to reflect cycles, story, and your own Wilderness & Wonder journey.
More about the course
Meet your tutor
Roxanne Evans Stout is an American mixed media artist, teacher, and author whose work is rooted in observation, intuition, and a deep connection to place. Drawing inspiration from landscape, walking, and quiet noticing, her practice spans collage, painting, assemblage, books, and land art.
Roxanne is known for her gentle, process-led approach to teaching, encouraging artists to slow down, simplify, and work with curiosity rather than expectation. Through her courses and workshops, she invites students to reconnect with the joy of making and to develop work that grows from personal experience and response to the natural world.
When we slow down and really notice what’s around us, the work begins to tell its own story.
- Roxanne Evans Stout
What students say about Wilderness and Wonder:
Roxanne developed in me a deeper appreciation and intimacy for my local landscape. She instilled confidence to try new ways of looking and gave me a personal freedom I had never experienced before. My life has been tremendously enhanced with a sense of wonder.
Creating ephemeral land art took away the anxiety of the blank page. This course helped me illustrate experience rather than representation and brought back childlike joy.
Roxanne has a gift for encouraging her students to follow their own hearts. There is always grounding, magic, and wonder in her work — and she helps us find our own.
Watching the landscape opened memories of smells, tastes, and feelings from my time in Australia. I felt overwhelmed in the most beautiful way. I am so happy I joined this course.
This course made me look at my own doorstep differently places I would normally take for granted. It was a beautiful journey that left me wanting to explore more.
Each module invites a new way of seeing, making, and responding to place.
-
Module 1 – Landscape Inspired Sketchbook Collage
Begin by slowing down and noticing the landscape around you - whether through walking, observation, or photographs. Roxanne guides you to translate what you see and feel into simple sketches and playful land art, focusing on shapes, colour, and mood rather than detail.
Back in the studio, you’ll create your own landscape papers and fabrics, learning how simplification and layering can lead to powerful abstract responses. This module gently opens the door to working intuitively and sets the tone for the journey ahead.
-
Module 2 – Tree Inspired Mixed Media Book
Trees become a metaphor for story, character, and time as you explore their forms through sketching, painting, and collage. Roxanne encourages you to work loosely, using positive and negative space to simplify complex shapes.
You’ll create a mixed media book that reflects your own way of seeing, learning to trust abstraction and let go of the need for technical accuracy. Many students describe this module as a turning point in feeling freer and more confident in their work.
-
Module 3 – Earth Inspired Sketchbook Painting
This module invites you beneath the surface - into layers, textures, and hidden rhythms of the land. Through sketchbook exploration, loose drawing, and tactile mark-making, you’ll begin to sense the pulse of the earth rather than illustrate it.
Working with pigments, collage, and stitching in the studio, you’ll build richly layered abstract pages. Students often speak about how grounding and calming this process feels, helping them reconnect with their art practice gently and without pressure.
-
Module 4 – Butterfly Inspired Larger Mixed Media Artwork
Inspired by Roxanne’s long connection to butterflies, this module explores movement, fragility, and transformation. You’ll begin with observation and land art, then return to the studio to experiment with mark-making, collage, and texture.
As your work grows in scale, Roxanne shows you how to push past hesitation and trust your instincts. This module supports students in taking creative risks while feeling held and guided throughout the process.
-
Module 5 – Assemblage Art (Water Inspired)
Water becomes the starting point for three-dimensional exploration. You’ll responsibly gather found objects, photograph your discoveries, and respond to the idea of flow, change, and connection.
Back in the studio, you’ll create assemblages that feel personal and intuitive rather than constructed. Students often describe this module as playful and freeing, opening up new ways of thinking about materials and meaning.
-
Module 6 – Personal Mandala Large Artwor
In the final module, everything comes together. Drawing on techniques from across the course, you’ll create a deeply personal mandala that reflects cycles, story, and connection.
Roxanne guides you gently through the process, encouraging reflection rather than perfection. For many students, this project becomes a meaningful marker of growth — a reminder of how far they’ve come and a foundation they return to again and again.
-
Bonus: Encaustic Painting
As a special bonus, Roxanne Evans Stout shares her gentle, intuitive approach to encaustic painting.
Working with layers of wax, colour, and texture on vintage book covers, Roxanne focuses on curiosity and play rather than technical complexity.
This optional bonus is designed to feel accessible and unpressured — offering you a new material to explore at your own pace, with no prior encaustic experience needed.
