Develop a cohesive body of mixed media work using your own photography, research, and personal narrative

Images, textures, marks, memories, but no clear way to connect them

You've accumulated work across different media – photographs, half-finished prints, stitching that doesn't yet connect. It feels more like a collection of experiments, not a body of work.

Visual Narratives gives you something different: a method for working with what you already have.

You don’t start from scratch. You start from where you already are.

And if your studio currently holds more unfinished work than finished, that's not a reason to wait. That's exactly the material this course works with.

Visual Narratives is a creative framework for makers who work across more than one medium – photography, print, stitch, collage, or mixed media – and are ready to connect what they make into a coherent body of work.

The course took me all the way from inspiration right through to a finished piece of work. It taught me how to research in depth and work on a body of work rather than one project per concept.

- Alexandra

Move from inspiration to a cohesive body of work with Visual Narratives

Tyrie USP 1

A subject worthy of your making:
Learn to identify places, histories, and ideas that genuinely matter to you – so every piece has something to say before you pick up a tool.

Tyrie USP 2

A process you can reuse:
Field research → studio exploration → resolution. One structured method that works for any subject, any time – not just for this course.

Tyrie USP 3

 More printmaking than you expected:
Collagraphs, photo-litho transfers, acetate methods – all without specialist equipment. Your kitchen table is enough to make bold abstract art.

Tyrie USP 4

Stitch, layer, and find materials to use with intention:
No more guessing whether something belongs in a piece. You'll know why it's there and what it’s doing.

Tyrie USP 6

Feeling confident with uncertainty:
Learn to stay with a subject long enough to let something unexpected emerge – without losing direction or abandoning the work.

Tyrie USP 5

Work you can exhibit:
Create a hand-bound artist book, body of work or simply a series of connected pieces that feels meaningful and you're ready to put in front of other people.

Visual Narratives is perfect if…

  • Your current work feels more like a collection of experiments and half-finished ideas than a body of work.
  • You're not a complete beginner. You have skills, materials, and ideas. What you’re missing is a framework that connects them.
  • You have an established making practice, in any medium, and you're ready to push it toward work that has something to say, not just something to show.
  • You love the idea of research-led making – going out into the world, gathering material, and letting a subject deepen over time.
  • You have a folder of photographs you've never found a way to bring into your making. You want a process you can return to for the rest of your practice – not just this course.

Visual Narratives is probably not right if…

  • You're looking for a fast-paced technique driven course or a step-by-step project with a prescribed outcome to replicate.
  • You're looking for a traditional or technical printmaking course – Sally's approach is expressive and process-led, designed for the home studio without specialist equipment.
  • You're a complete beginner with no existing art or making practice – this course asks you to bring your own subject matter and develop it further.
  • You need intensive feedback – Sally's approach is process-led and self-directed, with no tutor interaction in on-demand courses.

A research-to-resolution framework for multi-disciplinary makers.

What Sally’s students say about Visual Narratives:

Watching Sally explore her subject, test out ideas and solve problems in real time was a revelation. Seeing her demonstrate the importance of insight, invention and skill acquired over years of problem solving, this course is for people who want to bring those skills into their practice and their work to the next level.
Christine G.
Sally's reflective movement from location to studio to finished art showed me a way of moving my own mish mash of reflections, samples and inspirations to more satisfying resolved artwork. This course has helped me find a process to wrangle my photos into a creative output that integrates with my other artistic media.
Wendy O.
I've been photographing the forest for years, as inspiration for my artwork, though they didn't show up physically in the work. Learning new ways to use my photos: abstracting them, printing them on various papers, printing with them, and using them in collage, has served as a new starting point for my machine-stitched artwork and artist books.
Michele H.
The course has made me think outside the box, anything is possible, and nothing is wrong. I was stuck, suffering from Imposter Syndrome. After completing my MA, I lost my direction. This course has given me back my confidence and I'm in my studio every day. It is now a place I love going into.
Bridget H.
In the beginning of this course, I wrote that I wanted to work on three things. Being less literal, researching a project in greater depth, and working in a series. I've grown in all three areas.
Beth E.
For me, the most important part of Sally's teaching was how to develop a meaningful body of work. Story is an important element of my work, this course helped me to clarify how to develop that further. If you are looking for a course which can add depth and meaning to your work you've found it.
Norma S.
I have spent a wonderful time at my own pace, just thinking about all the inspiring advice, going step by step, letting the ideas flow and then going back and repeating it. Sally gives a huge amount of tips and tricks and I’ve learnt new techniques like paper litho and printing with oil paint.
Andrea E.

Meet your tutor - Sally Tyrie

Sally tyrie smiling at her desk

Sally Tyrie spent decades developing an investigative method that for her, is as much a part of the work as the end result.

She begins in the field, researching places, histories, and subjects with personal resonance, before moving to the studio, layering photographs, prints, stitch, and found objects into carefully considered compositions.

Drawing on that method, Visual Narratives gives you a new way of thinking about making.

You'll leave with Sally’s research-to-resolution process fully internalised, and able to apply it to any subject, long after the course.

My favourite question whilst working in my studio is “what if... ?”

What students say about Sally Tyrie as a tutor

The process Sally shared with us on how she approaches themes in her work to create a unique visual story was extremely informative. The biggest change in my personal art practice has been the approach to subject matter and themes in my work, and greatly influenced the way I approach new work.
Tricia R.
Sally's inquisitive, all-encompassing approach was incredibly valuable. In this course, I learned to find and process my own truly personal topics and content. That should really go without saying, but I think I had no real opportunities to do that before. I've always enjoyed photography, but it finally makes sense as the foundation of the creative process. I will especially take these two points away with me.
Wiebke M.
Sally is so engaging; I felt immediately drawn in. I have never done so much research on a subject before I started to create art. I have also never kept a sketchbook dedicated to this subject. I like this way of working and see myself using this method in the future.
Loralei R.
I enjoyed Sally's thoughtful and considered approach. Her process encouraged me to stop and notice how my art is changing and think about why it is changing. All of her instructions are so carefully thought-out, and I liked her frequent reminder to slow down and just explore a bit.
Janis O.
Sally's thoughtful, research-based approach to work really resonated with me. It made me slow down and think about why I'm drawn to certain places and how I might be able to convey that. So many new techniques to explore; I feel I've barely scratched the surface of this course.
Nicci. G.
Sally delivers the course in a very serene manner. She invites you into her creative practice and guides you through engrossing processes. Photo Litho and Collagraphy are processes that I have always wanted to explore and will definitely continue to use in my practice. I highly recommend this online course.
Jacqueline Q.
I had a desire to create and express myself in art and textiles, but not the ability to take an idea and progress it. After the course I now know how to start, explore, challenge myself, and come to a pleasing conclusion. The course will make you smile and want to start filling your own sketchbooks.
Alex H.
