Composition and colour with Julian Jamaal Jones
Register your interest in this course:
A contemporary textile course exploring colour, abstraction, composition, and creative authority - through cloth.
This upcoming online course with Julian Jamaal Jones is an invitation to step into colour, composition, and confidence - without apology.
Working through sketch, printed cloth, and stitched surface, Julian will guide you through his informed and intuitive approach to contemporary textiles to expand traditional quilting practices. You’ll explore how colour behaves, how unlikely combinations can work together, and how to build quilted compositions that feel intentional rather than accidental. This is not about copying a style. It’s about understanding why something works - and trusting yourself to make bold, personal decisions in your own practice.
Expect a course grounded in abstraction, lived experience, and contemporary quilting - where fabric becomes a site for expression, protection, experimentation, and joy.
I don’t believe in rules. I believe in style.
- Julian Jamaal Jones
Meet your tutor Julian Jamaal Jones
Juian is a multidisciplinary textile artist whose work reimagines quilting as a contemporary artistic language. Drawing on abstraction, colour theory, music, faith, and family lineage, Julian creates bold textile works that challenge assumptions around craft, authorship, and visibility.
Originally trained in photography, Julian brings a sharp compositional eye to cloth - treating fabric as both surface and structure. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in permanent museum collections, including Cranbrook Art Museum. At the heart of his practice is a commitment to creative freedom, cultural memory, and trusting intuition over trend.
Julian lives and works in Indiana, USA.
