What Toni's students say:
If you want to explore what you can create with a "book" form, then just enroll! You can incorporate so many artistic media within these structures, like printmaking, embroidery, collage, weaving, and so much more.
Toni is a very talented artist and an excellent tutor. She presented the course material clearly and in an easy to understand manner. It felt like I was in the room with her.
The course has something for everyone and has been a joy to participate in, for me lots of new techniques which were explained and demonstrated so thoroughly.
If you love paper, books and maybe origami then this is just the workshop for you. It has been lovely to learn from Toni, she has given us so much of herself.
I have always loved looking at artist books and often wondered how to make them. This course has encouraged me to have a go at my own books. Toni is a great teacher and the course format makes it very easy to dip in and out as I feel able.
Want to create eye-catching artist’s books from your excess papers and prints? It’s easier than you might think!
What if a book didn’t need pages… or even words? What if art didn’t have to hang on a wall?
Unbound is a playful and accessible online course for artists of all kinds. Guided by printmaker and mixed media artist Toni Hartill, you’ll discover unconventional bookmaking techniques and creative structures that challenge everything you thought you knew about books, and even about art itself.
If you’re inspired by paper, texture, fabric, or stories and curious about what’s possible with the materials you most likely already have, Unbound will help you create extraordinary artist’s books full of meaning, movement, and surprise.
In Unbound: Artist's Books with Toni Hartill, you’ll:
Create a collection of finished artist’s books made from materials you most likely already have!
Develop the ability to create a variety of book structures, including concertinas, cascade books, hand-folded boxes, and more.
Learn techniques that apply across fibre art, mixed media, and printmaking.
Walk away with a workbook of new marks, colours, techniques, and ideas to revisit.
Experience a more playful, expansive view of what your art practice can hold.
Join a global community. Connect with like-minded artists, and show your work in a curated online exhibition.
That’s why I won’t be teaching you how to bind books in a traditional sense. Instead I’ll encourage you to defy conventions, and spark new directions through play and experimentation.
-Toni Hartill
Toni Hartill is a printmaker and mixed media artist from Aotearoa New Zealand. Through prints, folds and found materials, Toni creates artist books that feel less like objects and more like experiences.
With a background in interior design and a love of process, Toni brings structure and play together in unexpected ways. In Unbound, Toni invites you to loosen the corset of convention, let go of the rules, and have fun.
Unbound isn’t book-binding course. There’s nothing technical or overly complicated to learn, and you won’t need any fancy gadgets or great expense to get started. Instead, this online art course is truly fun – and accessible! – for every type and level of artist to explore structure, spark new ideas, and turn what you already have into something completely unexpected.
