Jane Walkley is a Leeds-based artist working across tapestry, mould making, and casting. Her practice explores memory, labour, and regeneration within post-industrial sites. In this conversation, she reflects on her research at Sunny Bank Mill, where material, rhythm, and lived experience converge. The episode offers a considered look at process-led making and how meaning develops through repetition, attention, and time.
Building a practice through rhythm and repetition. Repetition can support both process and meaning. Jane’s approach shows how rhythm can guide making and sustain momentum over time. It offers a slower, more consistent way of working.
Working with material and place. Materials can carry meaning beyond their surface. Jane’s use of site-specific elements shows how work can connect deeply to place and memory. It encourages more intentional material choices.
Making within everyday life. This episode offers a practical view of working in small, consistent pockets of time. Jane shows how a sustainable practice can develop alongside daily life. It shifts the focus from time available to time used.
Letting the process shape the outcome. Gain insight into allowing work to evolve through making. Jane’s process highlights how openness can lead to stronger outcomes. It encourages flexibility over fixed results.
Connecting with shared histories. Engaging with others’ experiences can deepen your work. Jane’s conversations with former workers shape her practice in meaningful ways. It offers a way to connect personal work to wider contexts.
