From the archives: Rescued pages with Sarah Z Short

Rhode Island collage artist and printmaker Sarah Z Short gives discarded books and paper ephemera a second life. This conversation explores working with repurposed materials, building from the grid, and the happy accident that sparked her boro-inspired series.

Show Notes

Key takeaways from this episode:

  • Let shape lead, not meaning. Sarah chooses wooden type for its form rather than the words it spells. It’s a fresh way to see letters as pure design and free your work from literal messages.

  • Start with the grid. You’ll learn how a simple grid helps the eye travel across a composition, and why nudging things slightly off balance makes a piece more interesting.

  • Pay attention to the spaces in between. Sarah shows how negative space, the ground rather than the figure, can become the most compelling part of your work.

  • Let materials and mistakes guide you. From an accidental ledger mark to a collage that slid right off its panel, you’ll see how happy accidents can spark an entire series.

  • Collect with care. Discover how Sarah decides what to tear up and what to treasure, and how repurposed paper can carry hidden stories into new work. shows how deeply understanding a traditional material gives you the freedom to reinvent it and make it your own.
