Form to Freedom - Student Exhibition 2021
“Education is not the filling of a pot, but the lighting of a fire” - W.B. Yeats
Encompassing Place
This group exhibition by new weavers ablaze with ideas, proves that the greatest achievement of a teacher is to make themselves obsolete. The enormous variety in these fibre sculptures not only ‘encompass place’ in the sourcing of natural or recycled materials within a 1-mile radius of home but also encompass individuality; neat and symmetrical or wild and organic, bright and bold or neutral and gentle. At a such a time of flux in the world, when many have been forced indoors, what better meditation than to take a simple walk, stay present and observant, to prepare fibres and hold them in your hands, to weave them together? It might just be the most reverent way to honour our home, the earth. I am bursting with pride to have walked beside these artists on part of their journey to unearth their individual creative expression.
