Ceramic artist Juz Kitson creates visceral, hybrid sculptures that blur the line between human, animal and object. Working across porcelain, found materials and installation, her practice is both technically rigorous and deeply intuitive. In this Friday Feature Artist interview Juz reflects on process, materiality, and what it means to reinvent tradition while building a sustainable creative life.
Environment shapes artistic growth – not credentials alone. Juz reflects that art school mattered less for the qualification and more for being surrounded by “creative, like minded peers”. Community and context can be as formative as formal training.
Process holds more meaning than outcome. There’s a constant tension between making and finishing. Juz describes a lingering sense that works are never fully resolved – suggesting that creative practice is an ongoing dialogue rather than a final statement.
Reinvention is at the heart of contemporary practice. By learning traditional ceramic techniques and then “turning it upside down”, Juz positions innovation as an act of deep understanding rather than rejection of history.
Ambition must be balanced with sustainability. From physically demanding studio work to burnout in her early career, Juz highlights the importance of rest, routine and longevity in maintaining a creative life.
Making is both instinctive and structured. Her practice moves between meticulous planning and spontaneous creation – from CAD drawings and templates to intuitive, one-sitting sculptural forms – revealing that both discipline and freedom are essential to artistic evolution.
