Student Success Story: Heather Close
Heather Close is an abstract painter and regenerative farmer based on the west coast of Scotland. Her days are shaped by land, weather, animals, and...
Kerri Hollingsworth is a fibre artist and furniture upholsterer living on a property in regional Victoria, surrounded by nature that finds its way into every piece she makes. In this conversation, Kerri returns to Take Two to talk about her new course, Threads of Connection – exploring what it means to teach intuition, work with salvaged materials, and trust that creativity is not something you find, but something you unlock.
Creativity flows through you, not from you. Kerri's view of creativity as a constant beam of light – not a finite resource – will shift how you think about originality, running out of ideas, and the fear of being copied. You'll leave with a more generous, expansive understanding of what it means to make.
Salvaged materials carry more than you think. You'll discover how working with recycled fibres, fabric offcuts, and found objects creates richer, more layered artwork than starting fresh. Kerri's approach shows how the history embedded in a piece of cloth can become part of the story you're making.
Techniques are a starting point, not a ceiling. Kerri developed her own methods because she needed a texture that didn't exist yet – and this episode will encourage you to do the same. You'll understand how foundational skills in latch hook and weaving can be reimagined into work that is entirely, unmistakably yours.
Teaching and sharing deepens your own practice. Kerri reflects on how developing Threads of Connection helped her understand her own creative language more clearly. You'll gain insight into how the act of generosity – sharing knowledge freely – keeps creativity in motion for everyone.
Nature is a feeling, not a reference. Rather than trying to recreate what she sees, Kerri draws on the essence of a landscape – a leaf, a riverbed, a gust of wind – and lets that feeling move through the work. You'll be encouraged to stop painting the picture and start translating the experience.
During the live interview, we shared some images of Kerri’s artwork. Since you’re listening to the podcast version, we’ve made these images available for you below.
