Transience
Student exhibition:The Way of Wabi Sabi Collage with Donna Watson "Welcome to 'Transience', a student exhibition that celebrates the beauty of the...
Wabi Sabi is an appreciation of the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. We see the beauty in things weathered, rusty, textured, worn, torn, and yellowed. We see the potential in these aged papers and old things, for possible renewal, as we recreate the old into the new. We look at the smaller details and find the beauty in what remains after the effects of time, weather, and usage. We can see the possibilities for new creation out of the old. Wabi Sabi can also be viewed as a way of life, to look for the smallest details around you… for the renewal all around you.
Renewal can also be felt in our memories and feelings from our childhood, our travels, or more recent experiences. Where you find renewal around you depends on who you are…what and how you respond to what you see, feel, and experience. We are all unique in that we can see the same thing and react in a different way.
Participants were encouraged to look for the smaller details and imperfections around them. They were encouraged to try new ways to create collage papers. They were encouraged to express more personal content. By looking for more personal expression, they discovered a deeper connection to their work and themselves. As you look through this exhibition, I hope you see what I see… that each individual worked on their own unique style and artistic voice. I hope you see their dedication to finding their own identity. I hope you find the beauty and creativity, as they took old papers and nature or family tokens, and turned these old finds into a collage of renewal and unfolding light. I am very honored to be a guide and support to artists who are on their own journey of self-discovery. I hope you find inspiration among these beautiful works and the artist’s unique visions. Join me in viewing these wonderful collages of renewal and light.
