Meet Claire Benn

Portrait of Claire Benn Smiling at the camera

Claire Benn is a UK-based textile artist, author, and educator with more than 20 years of international experience. Before returning fully to her art in the late 1990s, she worked as a freelance training and development consultant, coaching people one-to-one, a background that still shapes how she mentors other artists today.

In 2013, encountering Agnes Martin's work gave Claire permission to make the quiet, reductive art she'd always been drawn to. Her practice now centres on raw earth pigment, some bought, some foraged from her garden, her walks, and places that matter to her. Text has been part of her work just as long, inspired first by her father's calligraphy and later by artists like Denise Lach and Brody Neuenschwander.

Claire's teaching is grounded in self-awareness, confidence, and building a creative habit that lasts. In Out of This Earth, you'll work directly with earth pigments to root your practice in the ground beneath you. In Beyond Technique, her coaching background comes to the fore as she guides you through refining your mindset, self-critique, and voice. And in TEXTure, you'll explore handwriting as art, including a technique for making cloth behave more like paper.

Whatever draws you to her courses, you're in the hands of an artist who's spent decades finding her own voice, and loves helping others find theirs.

What Claire's students say

I have never had a teacher who went so far above and beyond the parameters of the course to touch ever single student no matter their experience.
Susan C.
The course has had a profound impact on my current art practice. It taught me the beauty of simplicity in my work. By using earth pigments, I learned to appreciate the subtle nuances and earthy tones that can create powerful visual impact.
Svitlana S.
Claire is an exceptional teacher with a true generosity of spirit. She genuinely cares about her students’ outcomes and takes the time to offer thoughtful, constructive feedback.
Lucy D.
This course far exceeded my expectations. It helped me face my fears, find the courage to share my work again, and start looking for opportunities to exhibit. Claire and the Take Two team have created something truly one of a kind - the best course I’ve ever taken.
Isabel C.
This course has given me a wealth of knowledge on pigment-to-cloth techniques, as well as a clearer understanding of how pigments behave on paper. I've come away with a whole new set of tools to enrich my mixed media practice.
Lucy D.
Learning to use materials that make my art practice more sustainable was my primary goal with this course. The bonus was spending time soaking up the philosophical and conceptual investigations Claire's brilliant teaching style provided.
Sheary C.
This course has been such a rich personal experience. Claire's teaching focus and mentoring have given me such a solid foundation and combined with Donna Watson's Masterclass I feel in a totally different creative space.
Denise H.
I enjoyed Claire’s no nonsense teaching style and the encouragement to go out there and make your own art rather than being a copy of the tutor.
Jill C.
I had already been using text in my textile work, but it felt obvious and unresolved. This course completely shifted that. The principles and techniques I learned from Claire have continued to shape my work long after the class ended.
Annie H.
