Let there be light!
The works gathered here respond to Lissa's invitation to consider light not as backdrop or effect, but as subject – something to be held, questioned, and made visible through materials and process.
Student exhibition: Connecting – A Philosophy of Making with Lissa Hunter
"There is probably no visual element more potent than the range from darkness to light. It is how we decipher the world around us at its most basic level. The light reveals what dark obscures. But the word ‘light’ also describes a lack of weight, a dilution of color, an expression of wisdom. We lighten our load, we wear light-colored clothing in the heat of summer, and we see the light when we comprehend.
Light breaks. It leaks. It enhances. It enlivens. It travels at great speeds. It shows us the way. And light was the starting point, the idea, behind the work for this exhibition. For some, it was specific. For others, it was a jumping-off point. However, each artist approached it, and you have here the results of
Using an idea, materials, and techniques to make a personal statement – all beginning with the suggestion of ‘Let there be light!’
To the students in Connecting, I give a heartfelt thank you for bringing light into my life as
a teacher and artist. You have been generous, smart, kind, and imaginative. Those of you who are seeing this work for the first time have a treat in store. We can all use a little light, and you have it
here before you. Enjoy it and pass it on. Let there be light!xoL
