A-muse-ing

Exploring the many meanings of a muse, these works reflect thoughtful investigations into inspiration, curiosity, and personal expression. Through layered print, colour, and mixed media processes, each piece reveals a considered response shaped by experimentation and creative confidence.

A-muse-ing

Student exhibition: Art & Design with Tara Axford

"A-muse-ing is an exhibition celebrating the many interpretations of the word “muse.” In this case, participants were asked to explore the concept of inspiration; whether the muse took the form of a person, a memory, artwork or something entirely abstract, how could this be translated into another form.

Creativity is the spark that transforms the ordinary into something else. It’s a curiosity-driven adventure, unfolding in a sketchbook, studio, or even amidst life’s unpredictable turns. Like any journey, it comes with disruptions, unexpected detours, and moments of uncertainty. Still, the true magic lies in the process—the discoveries made along the way, the emotions stirred, and the sense of fulfilment that follows.

The destination may shift, but the experience is the reward, reflecting the joy of exploration and self-expression.

Inspiration can be found in countless forms as long as we remain open to the possibilities surrounding us. While external sources can certainly ignite our creativity, we can tap into our passions and curiosities to become our own muse. The challenge lies in nurturing these sparks of inspiration, having the discipline to explore their potential, and being willing to step into the unknown. Creativity is a blend of knowledge, tools, techniques, and an openness to discovery – a readiness to embark on the next adventure, wherever it may lead.

My Art & Design course spotlights artists from the past and present. Using the versatile gel plate as our primary tool, we embarked on that adventure equipped with various techniques. Participants explored multiple themes, from nature to humanity, emotions, the interplay of shapes, colour, ephemera, and the wonder of a layered print.

While looking through the group’s posts, I loved reading words like fun, happy, explore, addictive possibilities, and the excitement of fresh ideas. Well done to you all for applying yourselves!

The muse – whether found within or drawn from the world around us – acts as a spark for creative expression, offering impetus and inspiration. By staying curious and engaged, new ideas can flow; embracing the muse isn’t just about finding inspiration; it’s about nurturing a practice that keeps creativity alive and evolving.

I hope you enjoy flipping through  “A-Muse-ing” as much as I have."
